FAQs
Yes, Bodmin is definitely worth a visit, especially if you're interested in Cornwall’s history and countryside. It’s one of the oldest towns in Cornwall and sits right on the edge of Bodmin Moor, offering easy access to scenic walks, landscapes and historic sites. You’ll find unique attractions like Bodmin Jail, heritage railways, stately homes like Lanhydrock and a mix of museums, independent shops and cosy cafes. It’s a great base for exploring both inland Cornwall and the coast.
No, Bodmin isn’t a seaside town – it’s located inland in central Cornwall. But it’s well-positioned for visiting several popular beaches and coastal towns, such as Padstow and Polzeath, which are around a 30-minute drive away.
Bodmin is known for its history and connections to some intriguing parts of Cornwall’s past. It’s most famous for Bodmin Jail, a former 18th-century prison that’s now a major attraction with immersive exhibits and spooky tours. The town is also closely tied to Bodmin Moor, an atmospheric landscape full of myths, legends and scenic hikes. Bodmin also played a role in Cornwall’s transport history, being a key stop along the Bodmin and Wenford Railway and the start of the Camel Trail, a popular cycling and walking route.
Bodmin is one of Cornwall’s larger inland towns, but it still has a relaxed, small-town feel. It’s big enough to have all the essentials – supermarkets, restaurants and leisure centres – without feeling too busy. It’s a practical hub for exploring the wider region in a peaceful countryside setting.
There’s plenty to enjoy in Bodmin, whether you’re into history, nature or a bit of adventure. One of the top spots is Lanhydrock House, a National Trust estate just outside the town. Explore the grand Victorian mansion, take in the sweeping gardens that change with the seasons and enjoy woodland walks that are especially popular with families and cyclists. Head to the Camel Valley Vineyard, set in the hills nearby, it’s a great place for a relaxed tour and wine tasting. The views from the terrace are stunning, and the atmosphere is laid-back. If you’re after something a bit different, the Bodmin and Wenford Railway is a must. This steam railway takes you on a journey through the Cornish countryside, with regular themed rides and seasonal events. Visit Bodmin Jail, a former 18th-century prison turned immersive visitor attraction — complete with stories of crime and punishment, atmospheric tours and even ghost walks. If you’re into myths and legends, Bodmin Moor is a short drive away and ideal for walking or cycling, with rugged landscapes and tales of the famous Beast of Bodmin to uncover. Other highlights include Priory Park, a peaceful green space great for picnics and walks and The Courtroom Experience, where you can try out a mock trial in a real courtroom setting from the 1800s.
Yes, Bodmin has a compact town centre with a mix of local shops, cafes, pubs and historic buildings. You’ll find everything from independent bakeries to high-street essentials, as well as regular markets and community events. It’s a good spot for a stroll, especially if you want to browse or grab a bite before heading out to nearby attractions.
Bodmin is around 10–12 miles from the north Cornwall coast, so you can reach the beach in about 25 to 30 minutes by car. Some of the closest and most popular beaches are Padstow, Rock, Polzeath and Daymer Bay. Whether you’re looking for surfing spots, golden sand or peaceful coves, Bodmin makes a great inland base that’s still close enough to enjoy the sea.
Yes, Bodmin is home to the ruins of Bodmin Castle, also known as Castle Canyke. It’s not a traditional castle with towers and turrets, but the remains of an Iron Age hillfort just outside the town. While it’s mostly earthworks today, it’s an interesting historic site to visit and a peaceful place for a walk, with views over the surrounding countryside.
