Many visitors travel to Lyme Regis to witness the stunning natural beauty of the coastline, a recognised World Heritage Site. The area of Lyme Regis and greater Dorset has been a frequent spot of archaeological digs due to the age of the land as well.
The town itself developed at least 1,000 years ago and became an important port town of Britain in the 13th century. Lyme Regis's harbour wall, the Cobb, dates to this time.
Additionally, Lyme Regis has several buildings still surviving from the 13th century. The mill in Lyme Regis has been restored and is in use once again, as it had been since at least 1340. Nearby St Michael's church has a history stretching back to the 13th century, though the current structure dates to the 1500s.
Lyme Regis is special because it sits at the heart of the Jurassic Coast. Known for its stunning natural beauty, this coastal town boasts fossil-rich cliffs, a charming seafront and a historic harbour.
Lyme Regis is known for its beautiful coastline, fossil hunting and its role as part of the Jurassic Coast. It is also famous for the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival, where visitors can learn about the rich geological history of the area. The town’s iconic Cobb Harbour has been a significant feature in both history and literature, including Jane Austen’s "Persuasion."
Lyme Regis is part of the Jurassic Coast, which is known for its geological significance. The name refers to the 95-mile stretch of coastline in southern England that displays rocks from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, making it an important site for fossil discovery. The cliffs around Lyme Regis are some of the richest areas in the world for finding fossils from these ancient times.
In Lyme Regis, there’s plenty to do for nature lovers, history enthusiasts and families. Visit the Lyme Regis Fossil Museum, stroll along the Cobb or enjoy a walk along the South-West Coast Path. You can also explore the quaint shops, cafes and galleries or take part in fossil hunting along the beach.
Start your day with a visit to the Lyme Regis Fossil Museum to learn about the region’s geological history. Take a walk along the Cobb Harbour, enjoy some local seafood for lunch, and then spend the afternoon fossil hunting at Monmouth Beach. End your day with a stroll through the charming streets of Lyme Regis or take a boat ride along the coast for spectacular views.
Lyme Regis is famous for its independent shops and boutique stores, which offer everything from unique antiques to locally made crafts and artwork. The town’s charming, historic streets are lined with shops that specialise in art and vintage goods, making it a great spot for some leisurely shopping.
Lyme Regis has a pebble beach, but there is also Monmouth Beach, which offers a mix of pebbles and sand. While the beach is not fully sandy, it is still ideal for a walk, picnics and fossil hunting. A short distance away is Charmouth Beach, which is another great location for families.
Lyme Regis offers many family-friendly activities, including fossil hunting along its beaches, visiting the Lyme Regis Aquarium and exploring the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum. Kids will also love a trip to the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium or a boat ride from the Cobb.
