FAQs
Fife stands out for its incredible mix of coast, countryside and history all in one region. It’s known as the "Kingdom of Fife" thanks to its royal roots, and today it blends scenic fishing villages, sandy beaches, historic towns and local food scene. The area is also home to the Fife Coastal Path, one of Scotland’s best long-distance walking routes. Whether you're into golf, castles, or just enjoying a slower pace by the sea, there’s something for everyone!
Fife is probably most famous for St Andrews, the world-renowned “Home of Golf,” and also home to Scotland’s oldest university. But there’s more to it than golf – Fife is known for its pretty coastal villages like Anstruther and Crail, its fresh seafood (especially fish and chips), and its deep ties to Scottish history. It was also an important region during the industrial era, especially for coal mining and textiles.
Definitely. Fife is ideal for a short break or a longer stay. Whether you're looking to explore ancient castles, hike scenic trails, enjoy some of Scotland’s best coastal views or play a round of golf at a world-famous course, it has a bit of everything. Plus, the mix of fishing villages, wildlife spots and welcoming towns gives you lots of ways to fill your days.
Fife is known for its fresh, locally sourced food, especially seafood. Coastal towns like Anstruther are popular for top-notch fish and chips, and you’ll also find plenty of fresh lobster, crab and langoustines. The region is great for soft fruits like strawberries and raspberries in summer, along with local bakery goods, ice cream and craft beers.
Yes, Fife is just across the Firth of Forth from Edinburgh and very easy to reach. You can drive over the Queensferry Crossing or take a short train ride – for example, it only takes about 40 minutes to reach Kirkcaldy from Edinburgh Waverley.
There’s loads to see across Fife. Top spots include St Andrews with its golf courses, cathedral ruins and university buildings. You can also explore the pretty East Neuk villages like Elie, Pittenweem, and Anstruther – great for seafood and scenic walks. History fans should check out Dunfermline Abbey, Falkland Palace, and Aberdour Castle. Nature lovers might enjoy Tentsmuir Forest, Lochore Meadows, or the Isle of May for seal and puffin spotting.
It depends on what you're looking for, but Glenrothes is the official administrative hub. Dunfermline is the largest town and packed with history, while Kirkcaldy is another major town with good shopping and a waterfront promenade. St Andrews, though smaller, is probably the most famous and popular with visitors thanks to its golf courses, university and beach.
The Fife Coastal Path is a must – it stretches for over 100 miles from Kincardine to Newburgh and takes in everything from clifftop views to sandy beaches and wildlife spots. Tentsmuir Forest is great for woodland and coastal walking. If you're after something more gentle, try a stroll along the beaches in Elie or St Andrews, or walk around Lochore Meadows Country Park. Falkland Estate also has scenic trails with views of the Lomond Hills.
