Coleraine is famous for its proximity to the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its unique basalt columns formed by an ancient volcanic eruption. The town also has a rich history dating back to Viking and medieval times, and it’s a hub for exploring the stunning Causeway Coast, including scenic cliffs, beaches and historic castles.
Coleraine is a medium-sized town, big enough to provide a variety of shops, restaurants and entertainment options, but small enough to explore comfortably on foot. Its scale makes it an easy base for visiting nearby natural attractions and historic sites without feeling crowded.
Several towns are within easy reach of Coleraine, making day trips simple. Nearby places include:
• Portrush – a seaside town with popular beaches and a famous golf course.
• Portstewart – known for its sandy beach and cliff walks.
• Bushmills – home to the world-famous Bushmills Distillery.
• Ballycastle – a gateway to the northern coastline and ferry access to Rathlin Island.
Coleraine is known for its rich history, vibrant market town atmosphere and proximity to some of Northern Ireland’s most spectacular natural landscapes. The town combines cultural heritage, riverside walks along the River Bann and easy access to coastal adventures, making it a well-rounded destination to visit.
Coleraine is a fantastic base for exploring the Causeway Coast, with plenty to keep you busy. Just a short drive away is the world-famous Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk across 40,000 interlocking basalt columns shaped by volcanic activity millions of years ago. If you fancy something a little smoother, the Old Bushmills Distillery is nearby, where you can see traditional whiskey-making in action and even sample a dram or two. Back in Coleraine itself, history lovers can explore the Mountsandel Fort, thought to be one of the earliest known settlements in Ireland, or take a stroll around the town centre with its shops, cafes and local markets. For something more relaxed, head down to the River Bann, where you can enjoy riverside walks, fishing or boat trips. Families will love the nearby Portrush with its beaches and amusements or a visit to Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne, a clifftop estate with great sea views. Golfers are spoilt too, with world-class courses like Portstewart and Royal Portrush just a short drive away.
Yes, Coleraine has plenty to keep adults entertained. You can explore local history at the Coleraine Museum, enjoy a tasting tour at Bushmills Distillery, take scenic walks along the Causeway Coast or unwind in riverside cafes and restaurants. The town also hosts cultural events, live music and traditional pubs, providing a mix of relaxation and entertainment for adult visitors.
Yes, Coleraine Railway Station connects the town to Belfast, Derry/Londonderry and other parts of Northern Ireland. This makes it easy to explore the region without a car, whether they’re planning day trips along the coast or visiting historic sites nearby.
The oldest building in Coleraine is St. Patrick’s Church, which stands on one of the town’s oldest religious sites, dating back to around 456 AD. Archaeological digs have uncovered medieval foundations beneath the current church, which was completed in 1885. While Coleraine Town Hall is an important historic building from the mid-19th century, St. Patrick’s Church holds the title as the town’s oldest surviving structure.
