FAQs
Yes, absolutely! Guildford is a historic town in Surrey that offers a great mix of culture, nature, shopping and history. Whether you're into exploring old castles, walking along scenic rivers, browsing unique shops, or just enjoying a relaxed day out, Guildford has something for everyone. It’s especially great for a quiet weekend away from the bustle of bigger cities.
Guildford is known for its picturesque High Street with cobbled stones and historic architecture, including the 17th-century Guildhall clock. It’s also famous for Guildford Castle, its lovely countryside surroundings like the Surrey Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the University of Surrey. Plus, it has ties to Lewis Carroll, who spent time there and is said to have written parts of Through the Looking-Glass while visiting.
Not quite. Guildford is in Surrey, which is a separate county just southwest of London. While it’s not part of Greater London, it's very well connected—only about 35-40 minutes by train from London Waterloo—so it’s often considered a commuter town.
Guildford is over 1,000 years old! It was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, but its history goes back even further, with Saxon roots and evidence of settlements from Roman times. Its long history is reflected in landmarks like the castle and the town's layout.
Start your day with a walk up the historic High Street and grab a coffee at one of the independent cafes. Visit Guildford Castle for stunning views and lovely gardens, then stroll down to the River Wey and take a scenic walk or even rent a boat. In the afternoon, explore shops or drop by the Guildford Museum. If you're into art, the Watts Gallery nearby is worth the short trip. End the day with a drink at one of the town’s many pubs.
Yes, Guildford is great for shopping! The High Street has a mix of high-end brands, popular chains and independent boutiques. You'll also find The Friary shopping centre and lots of side streets full of hidden gems. Whether you're after fashion, books, gifts or artisan goods, there’s plenty to explore.
Guildford town centre is compact enough to explore easily on foot, but big enough to offer lots to do. The main shopping area stretches along the High Street, North Street and Friary Street, with other parts like the castle, cathedral and riverside walks within comfortable walking distance.
Yes, you can! Guildford Cathedral sits on a hill and offers lovely views over the town; visitors are welcome to walk around the outside grounds. The inside is also open to the public most days, and it's worth stepping in to admire the modernist design and stained glass. Check ahead if you want to catch a tour or attend a service.
Definitely. Guildford Castle may not be as large as some others, but it’s full of history. The keep offers panoramic views over the town, and the gardens around the castle are beautifully maintained. It’s a great spot for history buffs or anyone looking for a place to relax.
