FAQs
Absolutely! Alnwick is a market town in Northumberland with a great mix of history, nature and character. From Alnwick Castle and Alnwick Garden to its independent shops, cosy cafes and pretty cobbled streets, the town offers something for everyone. Whether you're a history buff, nature lover or just after a peaceful weekend break, Alnwick is definitely worth a visit.
Alnwick itself doesn’t have a working train station anymore, but nearby Alnmouth Station (about 4 miles away) is your best bet for rail travel. It’s well-connected on the East Coast Main Line, with regular services to cities like Newcastle, Edinburgh and London. From Alnmouth, you can easily reach Alnwick by bus, taxi or car.
Alnwick is probably most famous for its starring role in the Harry Potter films. Alnwick Castle stood in for Hogwarts in the first two movies – remember those flying lessons on the broomsticks? The castle has also featured in Downton Abbey and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Alnwick is best known for Alnwick Castle, one of the largest inhabited castles in the UK and home to the Duke of Northumberland. The town is also famous for The Alnwick Garden, which features a grand water cascade, a poison garden and a treetop restaurant. Its historical market town roots, beautiful surrounding countryside and literary connections (including the famous Barter Books store) also make it stand out.
Yes, there’s plenty to keep you busy in Alnwick! Start with a trip to Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden, then browse the quirky Barter Books (housed in an old railway station), explore Hulne Park for a scenic walk or visit the Bailiffgate Museum to dive into local history. The town also has great spots to eat, drink and shop, and it’s a great base for exploring the Northumberland coast and countryside.
Not directly in town, but you’re very close to some of Northumberland’s best beaches. Alnmouth Beach is just a 15-minute drive away and offers wide sands and stunning sea views. Warkworth, Embleton Bay and Bamburgh Beach are also nearby, perfect for a coastal day trip from Alnwick.
You can admire Alnwick Castle’s impressive exterior and surrounding grounds from various points in the town – perfect for photos! However, to go inside the castle and enjoy the full experience, including the state rooms, exhibitions and activities, you’ll need to buy a ticket.
The River Aln runs through the town and gives Alnwick its name. It winds its way from the Cheviot Hills to Alnmouth on the coast, and you can spot it from various points around the town and nearby countryside.
