FAQs
Yes, it’s a fantastic place for a relaxed getaway. Ashby-de-la-Zouch is a historic market town in Leicestershire, surrounded by the National Forest and packed with things to see and do. Whether you're into medieval ruins, countryside walks or browsing independent shops, Ashby has something for you! The town’s castle ruins are a highlight, and the Bath Grounds are perfect for a picnic or a stroll. It’s also known for its welcoming atmosphere and seasonal events like the Ashby Statutes Fair.
Ashby is best known for its castle, which played a key role during the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War. It also features in Sir Walter Scott’s novel Ivanhoe, which helped put the town on the literary map. In the 19th century, Ashby was a fashionable spa town, and remnants of that era, like the Ivanhoe Baths and Royal Hotel, still stand today. The town also has a strong connection to the National Forest and is surrounded by beautiful green spaces.
Ashby-de-la-Zouch is officially a market town and serves as a local hub with shops and community events. It’s larger than a village and has a rich history, making it a popular spot for visitors.
Ashby is a small town in terms of area but has a lively community. It’s compact enough to explore on foot, with most attractions, shops and eateries within walking distance of the town centre.
Ashby doesn’t have its own train station. The nearest station is Burton-on-Trent, about 9 miles away. It’s well-connected with services to Birmingham, Nottingham and other major cities. From there, you can take a bus or taxi into Ashby.
There’s plenty to keep you busy:
Ashby Castle – Climb the Hastings Tower and explore the underground passage.
Bath Grounds – Great for walks and picnics.
Ashby Museum – Learn about the town’s history through engaging exhibits.
Market Street – Browse independent shops and enjoy a bite to eat.
Hicks Lodge – A nearby cycle centre with trails through the forest.
Conkers – A family-friendly activity centre with indoor and outdoor fun.
Charnwood Forest Alpacas – Book a walk with alpacas for something different.
Ashby is surrounded by lots of towns and villages:
Staunton Harold – Known for its hall and reservoir.
Repton – Once the capital of the Saxon Kingdom of Mercia.
Burton upon Trent – Famous for its brewing heritage.
Loughborough – A larger town with shops and museums.
Tamworth and Derby – Both within easy reach for day trips.
Definitely! Ashby Castle is a highlight of the town. It’s a partially ruined medieval fortress with a fascinating history. You can climb the tower for views across the countryside and explore a secret underground passage. The site is managed by English Heritage and includes interactive exhibits that bring the past to life. It’s especially fun for families and anyone interested in history or literature.
