FAQs
Yes, Newport is definitely worth a visit! Often referred to as the island’s unofficial capital, Newport is right in the heart of the Isle of Wight and offers a great mix of history, shopping and culture. Whether you're exploring the Roman Villa, discovering local artwork at the Quay Arts Centre or enjoying a bite to eat in a cosy cafe, there’s plenty to do! It’s also a handy base for exploring the rest of the island, with good transport links and easy access to coastal areas.
Newport is special because of its blend of being a historic market town, but with the convenience of modern amenities. It’s home to the Newport Roman Villa, giving a glimpse into life here nearly 2,000 years ago, and the vibrant Quay Arts Centre, which showcases the best of the island’s creative scene. It also has a mix of independent shops and restaurants and is just a short drive from major island attractions like Carisbrooke Castle and Osborne House.
Newport has been around for centuries – the town as we know it today began to develop in the medieval period, but the area’s history stretches even further back to Roman times. The discovery of the Roman villa just outside the town centre shows that people were living here as far back as the 3rd century. It was officially founded in the late 12th century and has grown steadily ever since, becoming the Isle of Wight’s main hub for commerce and culture.
Newport itself doesn’t have a beach – it’s located inland, right in the centre of the Isle of Wight. But the good news is that you're never far from the sea on the island! Some of the closest beaches are in Cowes, Ryde and Sandown, all of which are easy to reach by car or bus.
