Things to do in Lewes
FAQs
Yes, Lewes is definitely worth a visit! It’s a historic market town nestled in the South Downs of East Sussex, offering a perfect mix of culture and natural beauty. Whether you're into browsing independent shops, exploring medieval ruins or walking through rolling countryside, Lewes has something for everyone. The town’s relaxed pace and quirky character make it a great destination for a peaceful and interesting weekend away.
Lewes is most famous for its Bonfire Night celebrations, which are some of the biggest and most elaborate in the UK. The town has a strong historical identity, thanks to landmarks like Lewes Castle, Anne of Cleves House. Lewes is also home to Harvey’s Brewery, one of the oldest independent breweries in the country, known for its traditional cask ales. All of this gives the town a unique blend of tradition, independence, and creativity.
The closest city to Lewes is Brighton, just under 10 miles away. It’s easily reached by train or car in about 15–20 minutes. Brighton is a vibrant seaside city with beaches, shopping, dining and entertainment.
Lewes is packed with things to do, especially for those who love the outdoors and history. You can start your visit by taking a scenic winding footpath through the East Sussex countryside — perfect for a peaceful walk. Explore the ruins of Lewes Castle, where you can climb to the top of the 1000-year-old Norman remains and take in the views of the town below. No trip to Lewes would be complete without sampling a cask ale at Harvey’s Brewery. Often referred to as the ‘champagne of beers’, Harvey’s is considered one of the best traditional brewers in Sussex, and their riverside brewery is a local icon. For panoramic views, head out to Firle Beacon, one of the highest hills in East Sussex.
Start with a visit to Lewes Castle for amazing views over the town and countryside. From there, explore the independent shops, antique stores and bookshops in the High Street and Cliffe area. If you’re interested in history, stop by Anne of Cleves House or the Lewes Priory ruins, or treat yourself with a drink from Harvey’s Brewery Taproom. For a peaceful end to the day, take a walk along the River Ouse or head into the surrounding South Downs for stunning views from Firle Beacon or Mount Caburn.
Lewes itself doesn’t have a beach as it’s located inland, but the coast is close by. Beaches at Seaford, Newhaven and Brighton are all within a 20–30-minute drive or train ride, making a seaside outing easy to fit into your trip. These beaches range from pebbled promenades to natural coastal areas, so you’ve got plenty of choice if you fancy a paddle or a walk by the sea.
Yes, walking along the River Ouse in Lewes is a lovely way to take in the town’s beauty. There are footpaths that follow the river through the town and out into the countryside, offering routes ideal for a morning stroll or an afternoon wander. The river walk takes you past boats, wildlife and even glimpses of the South Downs, making it perfect for a relaxing break from shopping or sightseeing.
