FAQs
Absolutely! Kendal is a lovely market town that’s often referred to as the "Gateway to the Lake District" – and for good reason. It's full of character and history, with plenty to explore whether you're into walking, shopping, food or culture. From its cobbled streets and castle ruins to great museums and galleries, there's always something to see or do. Plus, it's a great base if you’re planning to explore nearby lakes, hills and countryside.
Kendal is probably most famous for Kendal Mint Cake – a sweet, minty treat that’s been fuelling walkers and mountaineers for over a century, including Edmund Hillary’s Everest expedition! But that’s not all. It’s also known for its beautiful stone buildings, arts scene and as a historic centre of the wool and textile industry. The town’s heritage can still be seen today in its architecture and museums.
Kendal is lively without being overwhelming. It has a thriving local community and attracts plenty of visitors, especially in the summer months and around festivals or events. It’s busy enough to have a good choice of shops, cafes and cultural spots, but still relaxed and walkable – perfect for a laid-back weekend escape.
Kendal has a unique mix of history, culture and natural beauty. The town itself is full of character, with old stone houses and traditional markets. It’s surrounded by stunning scenery and is just a stone’s throw from the Lake District National Park. You can enjoy a peaceful riverside walk, explore Kendal Castle, visit art galleries and museums, and still be close to the fells and lakes.
