Aberdare is known as the “Queen of the Hills” and was once a cultural epicentre in South Wales. In the 19th century, it earned the nickname “Athens of Wales” thanks to its arts scene, strong literary tradition and musical heritage. It played a key role in Wales being called the “Land of Song”, with choral master Caradog leading the Great Choir of South Wales to victory in London’s Crystal Palace competitions in the 1870s. Aberdare is also considered the birthplace of the British film industry, with early filmmaker William Haggar producing over 30 films here.

Aberdare is known for its industrial heritage, particularly coal mining and ironworks, which shaped the town’s growth in the 19th century.
