Foodies will love trying all the best dishes in Baden-Württemberg. Tuck into meaty meals like Saumagen or Leberknödel – a liver dumpling dish that’s loved by locals – before treating yourself to a slice of the classic Quetschekuchen plum cake. Plus, city breaks in Heidelberg wouldn’t be complete without trying a ‘Studentenkuss’, a local sweet treat made up of chocolate, nougat and waffle. The name literally translates as a 'student's kiss', and giving one to an admirer is a sweet tradition that started back in the 19th century at Café Knösel – so it’s an ideal souvenir to bring back from weekend breaks in Germany! Our hotels in Baden-Württemberg are perfect when you’re looking for the best places to eat breakfast in Heidelberg, too.
You’ll find all kinds of things to do in Heidelberg in the evenings. Take a walk along the town’s Lower Street or Untere Strasse for a taste of local culture – and traditional beers from the region! There’s also plenty of live events in Baden-Württemberg to enjoy at venues like halle02, the SAP Arena, and Heidelberg City Theatre. Best of all, not only is our Premier Inn Heidelberg City Centre hotel within easy reach of all the best nightlife, but it also has a stylish bar if you don’t fancy going out!
As well as being home to historic landmarks, this picturesque town on the Neckar River also has kid-friendly activities to enjoy on family holidays in Germany. Heidelberg Zoo is one of the most popular places to visit in Baden-Württemberg, and little ones will also love visiting amusement parks in Baden-Württemberg like Kinderparadies Heidelberg and Märchenparadies Heidelberg. Why not take the kids for a ride on the mountain railway or a river cruise along the Neckar?
Get out and explore the great outdoors throughout your trip to Heidelberg. Thanks to local spots like the Neckarwiese and the Heidelberg Botanical Garden, you’ll have plenty of chances to stretch your legs. But the best trail is the Philosophers' Walk in Heidelberg, a popular path along the Neckar River that treats walkers to some of the best views in town. Plus, a walk to the peak of the Königstuhl hill is a must on Baden-Württemberg trips.
Whatever the weather in Heidelberg, families and couples alike will find plenty of activities to enjoy. Heidelberg Castle should be right at the top of your list of places to visit in Baden-Württemberg, but the town also offers a whole host of museums and galleries to explore, from the German Pharmacy Museum and the Universitätsmuseum to the Heidelberger Kunstverein. Weekend breaks in Baden-Württemberg wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Schloss Heidelberg. This enormous ancient castle is one of the most famous landmarks in Germany. It’s been restructured several times since 1214 – and repeatedly repaired after fire damage and lightning strikes! – but what remains is a fascinating glimpse into the region’s royal history, and a significant piece of Renaissance architecture.
After busy days out in Heidelberg, the Königstuhl is the perfect place to plot up and spend a laid-back afternoon. Meaning ‘the King’s Seat’, it’s a hill in the Odenwald Mountains that’s one of the best outdoor activities in Baden-Württemberg thanks to its unbeatable views of the town and the Neckar River. Hop on the Heidelberg Funicular Railway from the Old Town, enjoy a scenic ride up the mountain, and then soak up the views from the summit!
Couples and culture-lovers alike won’t want to miss visiting the Heidelberg Altstadt. This picture-perfect landmark is the heart of the city, and one of the most well-preserved old towns in Germany.
