Freiburg is famous for its Münster (or Minster) cathedral, which is located in a stunning square in the city’s Old Town. This free-to-visit cathedral is one of the oldest and arguably most beautiful in Europe, dating back to 1200 when its construction began. It sits in Münsterplatz square, which not only showcases some of the enchanting traditional buildings the area is famous for, but also hosts the city’s weekly markets and is a culture haven. Other fantastic architectural locations to visit include the two city gates, Schwabentor and Martinstor, and you can also enjoy spotting the small historic canals that run through many of the streets.
Enjoy views of this historic German city from above! Schlossberg Tower is a viewpoint just outside town, located along an easy incline with some steps (around a 30-minute walk), or accessible via a funicular railway. From here you can see the city in all its glory and, on the way back down, you can stop at the Kastaniengarten beer garden for a well-earned drink. For even grander views, head just outside of Freiburg and take a ride on the Schauinsland cable car - at the top, you can enjoy stunning views of the city, the Black Forest and as far as the Swiss Alps. From here you can also visit an old silver mine and spend time exploring some of the beautiful trails of the Black Forest.
Open since 1877, the Feierling Brewery is located just off Augustinerplatz in the Old Town. Here you can try the city’s very own beers in the laid-back beer garden or at the long wooden bar inside. The house beer is an amazing, fresh wheat beer that isn’t exported, making it a must-try for visitors - you won’t taste it anywhere else!
