Yes! The city offers a rich mix of historic architecture, world-renowned university buildings, picturesque riverside scener and a vibrant atmosphere.
Cambridge is famous for the University of Cambridge, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. It’s also known for its beautiful college buildings, punting on the River Cam, and notable alumni including Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking, and Charles Darwin.
Yes, Cambridge is a walkable city. Its compact size and pedestrian-friendly streets make it easy to explore on foot, especially around the historic colleges, markets and along the riverbanks.
While Cambridge is famous for its university colleges, there are plenty of other things to see in the city itself. The Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettle’s Yard gallery are both free and full of fascinating historical and artistic discoveries. Cambridge is well known for its theatres, the Cambridge Corn Exchange is a brilliant concert venue, and the ADC Theatre is the home of Footlights, a world-famous student comedy troupe, which has included notable Cambridge University alumni such as John Cleese, Richard Ayoade and Emma Thompson.
Despite the city’s small size, Cambridge has wonderful riverside parks and green spaces. Parker’s Piece near the city centre often hosts festivals and other fun events, Midsummer Common is a wonderful park along the river and Christ’s Pieces has gorgeous flowerbeds.
Cambridge isn’t all antiquities and cobbled streets, the city is home to fantastic shopping centres, from the iconic Grand Arcade in the heart of the city, to the Grafton Centre and Lion Yard shopping centre, all with a great range of high street and luxury brands. Mill Road is also a great place to go for specialist shops and excellent independent pubs and restaurants – it’s often where students and university staff turn for a breather from university life.
Punting along the River Cam is a Cambridge tradition, and can be a unique way to see the city – experiencing sights like the Bridge of Sighs and the university grounds from the river can be a magical experience. There’s also climbing walls, gyms, pools and cycling trails in and around the city centre.
Then, of course, there are the university colleges themselves, set within the gothic-styled college grounds, which are open to visitors. King’s College Chapel is a spectacular 15th century hall that hosts Carols from King’s every Christmas Eve, Trinity College houses the Wren library on its Great Court and Gonville & Caius College has beautiful grounds along Gonville Court and Caius Court.
To spend a day in Cambridge, start by exploring a few university colleges, such as King’s College and its iconic chapel. Then enjoy a punt along the River Cam, stroll through the Botanic Garden, visit the Fitzwilliam Museum and finish with a spot of shopping in the city centre.
