"Do not stay here!"
We recently stayed at this hotel and, unfortunately, our experience fell well below the standard we would expect from a Premier Inn.
The hotel is located in a fairly run-down area of Cardiff, although this was not a major concern for us as there was plenty of parking available and access was straightforward.
However, on arrival, the guest checking in ahead of us was actively complaining to reception about bed bugs and was showing both staff and other guests photographs of bites and what he alleged to be evidence from his room. This was an extremely concerning introduction to the hotel and immediately made us apprehensive about our stay.
We were then directed to our room via a corridor where carpets were being replaced. As we walked through, we could see extensive black mould on the exposed underlay, and the smell was overwhelming. The carpets throughout the route to our room also appeared heavily stained and dirty.
Upon entering our room, we were met with a similar damp and musty smell. Given the concerns raised at reception, we carried out a thorough inspection of the bed and mattresses. While we did not find evidence of bed bugs, we were disappointed to find that the mattress itself was heavily stained.
The cleanliness of the bathroom was also below an acceptable standard. The mirror and shower screen were smeared and dirty, there was visible mould in the corners, within sections of the tile grout, and around the shower screen seal. Most concerningly, there was urine residue behind the toilet seat and faecal staining on the underside of the seat, which should have been identified during routine housekeeping checks.
Had we been in a position to do so, we would have chosen to stay elsewhere. The bed itself was comfortable, and the room temperature was pleasant, but these positives were overshadowed by the cleanliness and hygiene concerns.
We had also booked breakfast. While the food itself was acceptable and the dining area generally appeared cleaner than other parts of the hotel, the tables were noticeably sticky. In addition, while eating breakfast we observed three rats feeding outside the restaurant windows, which was particularly off-putting.
Overall, this was not the standard of accommodation or cleanliness we have come to expect from Premier Inn. Given the numerous hygiene concerns encountered throughout our stay, we were extremely disappointed and would not choose to stay at this hotel again. We will also be contacting Premier Inn directly to seek an appropriate resolution to these issues.
