Edinburgh City Centre (Lauriston Place) hotel

We have been here before as the location is perfect for meeting up with family and very central to everywhere. Room was of good size, beds comfy and crisp white sheet but if the corridors were an indication of the cleanliness then we should of heeded that. There were scuffed paint flakes and not sure what along all the corridors and first room on floor 3 was so damp that we requested a move immediately, Asthma was kicking off within minutes. New room OK so far, no mould although the skirting in the bathroom left a lot to be desired, with water damage. It all unravelled on the cleanliness side after day 2, we hung the sign out to refresh the room, well within the time slot, it wasn't cleaned and when we made a complaint to reception they just handed us 2 towels. Next day (3rd day) we hung the sign and went to reception to ask for a refresh (bins were over flowing by this point and toilet paper very low (bins btw are so tiny, you would be hard pushed to fit a water bottle in it). When we returned they had only emptied the bins: wet towels still in the bath, beds not made, toilet paper very low and not hoovered. Had to ask for some more toilet paper but this was just handed out as a packet and we couldn't open the holder, 2 more towels given. I requested to make a complaint and was handed a card as reception couldn't directly help in that way. After making a formal complaint via email the email we received back was 'tough, you didn't sort out at the time with Management and they are not upholding the complaint'. I wouldn't bother with Breakfast either, if you still decide to stay it wasn't on most mornings. Will not be staying there again.

Staff were lovely but the place is chronically understaffed in the restaurant at breakfast. I felt really sorry for them as it's obvious the place is running on as few staff as possible. Final day there was no hot breakfast due to staff illness. The day before there was one woman running the kitchen and she looked frankly broken as it was so busy and she only had one pair of hands. Unsurprising she was unwell the following day. Location great, carpets need cleaning throughout. Staff doing their best and friendly despite being run ragged.

Upon arrival at the hotel there was an air of emptiness and neglect, shabby reception, grubby carpet, no staff, a queue of impatient people and one reception member who a) looked like she might have just joined b) had poor communication skills (no eye contact, or welcome) , c) was also trying to serve at the bar whilst in the midst of booking in people at reception. Upstairs corridor was also grubby The room was scruffy, duvet not ironed and crisp, duvet cover not put on correctly (so that it was like being swallowed inside an envelope when getting into bed), and pillows literally slung on the bed. However by far the worst thing was arriving at breakfast at at 07:10 to be told there was no chef; so no cooked breakfast in spite of having pre paid, ( I believe the chef hadn't turned up the evening before either....so why was a relief staff member not sought??) and no refund offered. Low staffing levels meant that the one person had to manage rather irritated guests alone due to the total absence of any senior staff members. Never in the history of a hotel stay have i wished that in had booked the Novotel hotel next door. Th room was expensive and did not represent value for money. Would not recommend or stay again. Hotel needs a revamp, more staff and better staff training.

Overall not a bad stay, room was clean, bed was comfortable. There was tea, coffee, milk etc in reception to replenish the room facilities when needed. Rooms arent cleaned daily unless requested but for a short stay that didnt bother us. Breakfast was lovely. Evening food service was extremely slow, almost an hour waiting for food when only 4 people in restaurant. Stairs were dirty and smelly and corridors could use some TLC.

Clean, efficient, friendly, comfortable, all you'd expect from a Premier Inn. Great location for walking to the main sites.
