      "Excellent and Affordable"
I would give this place a 4.5 if I could; Premier Inn was surprisingly a really nice and affordable stay; the only negative I can think of is the size of our tiny family room. It barely had enough room to move around, particularly with luggage. However, everything else was great; the breakfast was one of our favorites of many hotels, they have their own (pay) parking lot, they are located across the street from the Alstadt with many food & shopping options, there's a train station with a grocery store within sight of the hotel, and staff was friendly and helpful. Our room also had AC, which is rare in northern Europe. Remember to use a key card - and it can be any key card from any hotel, really- to activate the lights. Some of the areas around the downtown and train station can get sketchy at night, but we have a kid so were in relatively early.
      "just right"
Had a lovely stay in the Premier Inn Essen, its just by the main railway station and ideally situated for shops and local transport. Well up to P I standards. We stayed on the top floor with great views of either the train station or the rest of Essen - depending on which window you look out of! Didn't eat there so can't comment, but all the staff were very helpful - a credit to the company. There is a Lidl nearby for essential shopping, loads of shops in the station and a short walk to an Aldi. All very handy.
      "Christmas market"
We went for the Christmas Market , so we wanted to be close by. Nice location, close to the city center. The hotel is clean, friendly staff, nice breakfast. It says it has parking, but it is not the own parking lot, just a public parking space close by. So if you have more things to carry in the hotel, unpack in front of the entrance.
"Had a great stay, excellent staff"
Stayed here for 4 nights whilst travelling for work. Hotel staff are excellent! Very helpful, polite and friendly. Room was clean and comfortable,, overlooked carpark and train station didn’t hear any noise when window was shut. The bed was wasn’t the greatest, very soft and could feel the rim and springs, also the bed was made so the ends of the bed sheets were across the middle of the bed so they’d become a bit unmade. But pillows were great. Breakfast is excellent, plenty of choice. I opted to eat in the bar on my last night which I was disappointed by as the pizzas had hardly any cheese on them. Hotel was a great location though for us, with a taxi rank right outside it was easy to get to where we needed to go each day. As others have mentioned there is noticeable homelessness outside but this is more by the train station entrance and I just ensure I was aware of my surroundings when I went in there. There is a Lidl also right next door along with a McDonald’s and various other food places in the train station which was great. Overall great stay but please replace the mattresses!
"Perfect base hotel for traveling with family around Dortmund/Cologne Etc"
Stayed here on a short break and visit to Dortmund, Hotel is spotless and staff very welcoming, the bar area is very pleasant and very clean safe feeling about inside the hotel, perfect place to stay if you wish to travel around Dortmund, Cologne, Dusseldorf etc. The train station within yards from the entrance to the hotel is a negative and a positive as outside the train station avlot of homeless / drinking congregate especially on the evening which made us feel a little uncomfortable when walking to shop or train station but all major European cities / train stations are the same. Overall i would definitely recommend this hotel for a base to stay should you wish to travel around this area of Germany.
