Convenient, clean and helpful staff, good breakfast selection. A hotel where you can open the windows is a rare pleasure these days! Would book again with confidence!

We stopped over in Welwyn Garden City for two nights in September and had such a relaxed time. The absolute highlight was down in the dining room around 8:30 on Sunday morning when the breakfast was in full swing. I sat right by the front corner table watching the steam rise off the trays, and the chef brought out freshly sliced sautéed mushrooms that were seasoned to an extremely perfect level. Piled my plate high with piping hot hash browns, black pudding, eggs, and crispy bacon, all fresh and topped up without any wait at all. Sitting there with a big mug of white coffee while the sun hit the courtyard outside set us up brilliantly for the drive home. The room was spotless and everything worked well. Getting out of the car park was easy too, and the reception staff gave us a friendly wave when we checked out. Definitly booking here again next time we need a stop in Hertfordshire.

Room, OK. Check-in, adequate. Breakfasts - Amateurish and completely chaotic. If it was an episode of Fawlty Towers it would have been funny. They had run out of cutlery, run out of clean plates, run out of eggs, bacon, hash browns and Black putting...... which they didn't restock because they were focussing on cutting up mushrooms. This is the second time I've been here since they changed their 'catering' arrangements many many months ago and they still haven't sorted themselves out. ALSO: There was no notification when we booked or when we arrived that they were ripping up a chunk of the carpark and would have heavy machinery on site blocking the entrance and exit AT 8:30 IN THE MORNING !!! Having survived a couple of days of this lamentably badly run hotel, on leaving we weren't even given a grunt of acknowledgement from the reception staff. I won't give it a 1 star rating because it was clean and everything in the room worked and it would have been 3 or 4 star if the catering was even remotely properly staffed.... but it wasn't - so between the food and the blocked car park, 2* seems appropriate.

Checking in on the screen was impersonal and slow. A member of staff came to the front desk and did not acknowledge us at all. The banisters of the stair well were filthy. Stains on the banisters.On entering the room, i realised the room was facing the railway. No mention of this in your description. I went down to reception and the girl insisted that our room was not facing the railway ( room 122) . Terrible customer service. Explained i was a light sleeper and would like to move rooms. Again, she said we were not facing the railway. I left as she was not listening to us. The curtain was hanging off the hinge. Dirty cups. The bathroom skirting board was so dirty, it is actually now stuck on with a sticky residue. The trains kept me awake. The room was hot and we could not control the temperature. The upstairs people woke us at 6 with their tv, i could hear their conversation for 2 hours until they left for breakfast. Roadworks going on in the carpark and the original pub was closed. Drilling happening , which we were not made aware of. Overall a very disappointing visit. 2 rooms for 2 days, i wish i had paid more to go else where.....
