"Not a bad experience. James made it even better"
I had some trepidation about this booking. We needed a place to stay for one night before boarding the Queen Mary 2 in Southampton. We booked 7 months from sail date, and even then, a lot of hotels were full. I was able to secure a booking here despite some lackluster reviews. But, we enjoyed our experience.
It's not a posh hotel by any means. There is no HVAC except for a window, a fan, and a space heater. That's kind of shocking, to be honest. It appears the building used to have HVAC, but it doesn't work any longer. The room was clean, the bathroom was fine, and the shower was great. If we had been in a heat wave, this would have been a 1-star review. But with the cooler temps, our room was fine.
The surprise was the the hotel restaurant is as good as it is. We did the meal deal package (dinner and breakfast prepaid). All the food was quite good. It was nothing spectacular, but not bad for a mid-tier hotel restaurant. James waited on us in the restaurant for dinner and was fantastic. He was eager to give us Queen Mary 2 tips even though he says he's never had the privilege of sailing on her. He even wrote his tips down for us. James is an excellent employee and made our stay more special.

"Avoid - poorly looked after"
The car park is very small for the size of the hotel and doesn’t cater for enough parking spaces. There is a lack of staff presence at the hotel - when we returned to the hotel after attending a concert nearby there were alarms going off. We found a lady in the lobby who was distressed due to the noise of the alarms and by how she couldn’t check in. We’re insure how long she had been there but we remained with her for 10 minutes before a staff member finally arrived to turn off the alarm and help her. The BIGGEST thing about our experience was the room. The carpet hadn’t been fitted properly so was coming up. There was numerous damage to the walls as well as items visibly degrading. The bath tub also had a small hole in it which was a cause of concern. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend staying here. The hotel feels very unloved and in need of money being thrown at it. Additionally the hotel only had one working lift which was very small. The other lift was out of service and made leaving in the morning very difficult especially with the morning rush.

"Friendly service"
No one at front of house when we arrived and our QR code for self checkin would not work.
When front of house turned up very helpful and friendly.
One of two lifts not working
room clean bed very comfortable.
Bar prices very good and the service very good.
We have stayed in this hotel a few times and the staff always say welcome back.
Must point out, only one bar staff serving on most of the occasions we have stayed but you don’t have to wait long because the barman James works very hard and always with a good evening and always very cheerful.
