Cockermouth hotel

Review date: 10/9/2026. Hotel was adequate but the restaurant was a joke. We were five old friends meeting up, as we do in September. We all ordered the meal deal which included starter main course and a drink with breakfast in the morning. One of us ordered a side of onion rings. This all happened before 6pm and the restaurant was not busy. The first starter appeared about 5mins after order not bad, but with the wrong sauce. From then it got from bsd to worse. 3 times I was asked what my starter was. One main course came out after an hour. Unfortunately this was before the starter. Diners cheered when a dish came out of the kitchen, an absolute travesty. Nonsense followed nonsense and the final straw was when the pizza ordered at 6pm arrived at 9:20pm. It was roughly a 6" mini pizza and was sent back immediately. Fair play to the waitress who valiantly tried to calm the restaurant down as more and more frustration surfaced. Carl (the manager?) went missing in action. Sorry, inaction. I'll never be here again. Disgusting.

Location was good for us to explore the lakes. Atmosphere the hotel is a bit run down both on the outside and inside. It’s a self check in hotel, so no staff at the reception unless you ring the buzzer. A pretty depressing place. Our room was a premier plus room, the bed had seen better days and was pretty uncomfortable, we both didn’t sleep that well in it. The room itself was ok, downside was that the windows didn’t open so you couldn’t get any fresh air in the room, and it was hard to regulate the temp of the room, it was either cold or really warm, the fan in the bathroom didn’t work and it smelt a little damp. On day 3 of 4 we asked if the room could be cleaned. The only “cleaning” they did was empty the bins and gave us clean towels, the bathroom hadn’t even been cleaned. The restaurant was closed one of the nights we were there both for food and drink, so we had to walk to the nearest service station across the road to get some food and drink for the evening, we couldn’t even sit in the bar area it was locked off. Then the 3rd night it was a limited evening menu. We only had breakfast 2 out of the 4 days as the hot food was cold, and didn’t look particularly appetising. Overall our stay was not great, and we won’t be back to this hotel.

Whitbred are clearly on a cost cutting exercise, only one front of house member of staff on who was expected to be receptionist, restaurant front of house, waitress, cleaner. As a result breakfast was shambles, we couldn't get food on either night, and one morning we couldn't get breakfast. The member of staff was friendly, apologetic and massively let down by Whitbred management. We worked out she worked a 16 hour shift whilst we were there. Avoid and spend your money with a local business instead.

Room was fine but where do I start about their restaurant. Might just be the worst service I’ve ever had. Fawlty Towers? Clearly not enough staff. Had to wait 1hr and 20 minutes for half of the food to arrive. Eventually we were told they didn’t have one of the remaining items and the other item was still being cooked. Got a refund from the manager after another 20 minute wait. He then apologised and told us the chef didn’t know how to cook. Totally dysfunctional but the fault lies with Premier Inn. Just stay somewhere else or at least eat somewhere else
