History

Established in 1963, over the years this campus university has expanded to include more than 30 departments and centres, covering a wide range of subjects. Known for its inspirational teaching and pioneering research, as well as a modern campus with plenty of green space and a lake, it’s no wonder 15,000 people come to study at the University of York each year.

Getting there

With great rail links, close to major road networks and Leeds Bradford Airport a one hour drive away, getting to the University of York is easy.

Travelling by car in the city centre

Car

There are limited parking spaces on campus, so visitor parking is pay and display. It costs £1 per hour or £6 per day, and is free at evenings and weekends.

Getting around by bus

Bus

Buses heading to the university pass through the city centre every 5 minutes during the day.
Hop on a bus and you’ll be on campus in 20 minutes.

Train

The university’s main campus is located to the southeast of York city centre. If you’re arriving at York railway station either take your time with a 45-minute walk or jump on a bus.

Eating and drinking

The University of York’s campus is packed with places to eat and drink. There’s a whole number of cafés and restaurants offering everything from burgers and burritos to healthy Asian broths and salads, as well as bars and pubs for late night cocktails and pints.

If you want to head off campus, you’ll find more places to eat and drink in the city centre. With plenty of traditional tea rooms like Betty’s Cafe and a range of restaurants from fine dining at Melton’s to classic Italian at Il Paridiso del Cibo, every taste is catered for in York.

Our York North hotel is about a mile from the city centre, with easy access to the A19, A64 and the businesses in and around Clifton. To be within striking distance of the York Designer Outlet, or to get to the A1(M) quickly, Premier Inn York South West is the ideal place to stay. Premier Inn York North West puts you 3-4 miles from the train station and is close to handy road connections.
