The oldest higher education institution in the city, York St John University was founded as a teacher training college in 1841. Over the years that followed, the college increased its offering to include everything from occupational therapy to the liberal arts. In 2005 the college was given the power to award degrees, before being renamed York St John University the following year.

Getting there

York St John University's large urban campus can be found at the heart of the city centre action whilst Leeds Bradford Airport is a 1 hour car ride from the centre of the city and the university’s campus.

Travelling by car in the city centre


If you’re arriving by car, you’ll find York St John University well signposted. Parking is limited to visitors with a disabled badge, but there are several public car parks nearby.

Getting around by bus


There are plenty of bus routes running through York, including the the number 1 which stops right outside the University. Check out the First York website to find out more.

York Railway Station


Located to the north of the city, the university’s main campus is across the river from the railway station. Walk through the city in around 17 minutes, or hop on a bus.

If you want to grab a bite to eat or a coffee, you can choose from the Students’ Union, Fountain Café or Coffee Cart. Fancy something more substantial? The City Social dining room offers lots of classic British dishes to fill you up.

Heading off campus? You’ll find plenty of traditional tea rooms, like Betty’s Café Tea Rooms, and quirky pubs, like the House of the Trembling Madness, as well as a range of restaurants all within walking distance in York city centre.
