"Is it going downhill ?"
Great location ( 3-4 minutes walk from station ) , friendly and helpful staff , comfortable bed . Great breakfast . Very pleasant stay overall , but , unfortunately , on arrival in my room , a couple of surfaces looked as if they had been wiped over with an oily cloth and , worse , the toilet bowl was disgusting . I reported this to reception , but nothing was done . Disappointing , as my previous PI stays ( including this one ) had always been faultless .
"Overpriced. AVOID."
My stay here was extremely disappointing. The room had a strong smell of damp and mould, and overlooked a gravel car park that seemed to double as a meeting spot for boy-racers — meaning I was regularly woken up during the early hours. There was no information in the room about hotel services or procedures, so I only discovered afterwards that you need to specifically request room cleaning. The restaurant was equally poor: breakfast choices were very limited, and dinner took over an hour to arrive after ordering. Overall, a really substandard experience. Local businesses should think twice before booking employees in here — it’s overpriced, uncomfortable, and not conducive to rest.
"Decent rooms but it’s pot luck with the breakfast buffet."
This Premier Inn is in an ideal location. It’s a short walk from the railway station and an even shorter walk to Micklegate and the city walls. Check in was friendly and efficient and our room perfectly fine. After a good nights sleep the breakfast buffet was half decent, which means that it was also half bad; the negatives being having to clear a table to use, dried up scrambled eggs (to the extent of being crispy on top!), wrinkled and dried up mushrooms, and no black pudding. But let’s finish on the positives, the bacon was very good, as were the sausages when they eventually arrived. We had the breakfast as part of a special deal, but as Premier Inn buffets are pretty hit and miss these days, I’d probably find a local caff next time.
"Not a great work trip."
Stay here for three nights in September through a work booking. Hotel room was ok, although I had to ask for new towels and the room was not made up each day even though I asked it to be. You have to let reception know and place a card on your door, which I did but no room clean undertaken. Wanted to have dinner in the hotel restaurant, but told I could only eat if I did the deal of both a 2 course evening meal and breakfast. I explained I had breakfast included in our room booking, so didn’t need it and could I just eat in the restaurant, answered no. So the hotel lost three evening meals as I went down to the road to the pub not far away. Staff unhelpful apart from one lady who did everything she could to help. Hotel confusing as I went to the other attached hotel first, strange how two hotels that adjoin cannot be connected with one reception. Certainly won’t stay here again.
"Poor staff and uncomfortable room"
We booked a premier plus room so we could take advantage of the air con, which unfortunately was not fit for purpose. The vent was extremely loud and sounded faulty, not the sort of noise you could sleep with. My partner went to ask a member of staff about it, who told him “the noise will change with the settings”. When the noise didn’t go away, I went to speak to the staff later on and showed them a recording of the noise and was told by the same person that “it’s the kitchen vent system and it will stop after 9pm”. Of course, a kitchen extractor system won’t be linked to an AC system so we knew this was rubbish and they just didn’t want to say the AC was old and faulty. No room switch was offered so we used the room without air con which was a struggle. The room itself was a little run down. The mattress and pillows were very worn and uncomfortable and it was a bit unclean in places. I was shocked at the level of filth in the downstairs toilet near reception, it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. Hotel location was great, right by Micklegate and about 10/15 minute walk to the centre of York. Overall a disappointing experience, which is a shame as premier inn never usually disappoints.
