Edinburgh Food

Edinburgh for food fans

Edinburgh is a city where delicious food is always on the menu. From its Michelin-starred restaurants to exciting food-focused events, you can eat your way around the Scottish capital and sample everything from local dishes like haggis to international cuisines from every corner of the globe. While you can find mouth-watering meals to satisfy your appetite year round, during Edinburgh's festival season, there's more ways than ever to find edible delights and get involved in special events that tempt your taste buds.

Eating local in Edinburgh

One of the best ways to get to know a place is to sample its food, and with great food markets and pop-up events all over the city, you don't have to go far to sample Scotland's most exciting artisan producers. Every weekend there are a number of farmers markets that spring up around the city, selling everything from produce to hot and ready street food. Just a few minutes from our Princes Street hotel, the Edinburgh Farmers Market takes place every Saturday morning at Castle Terrace. Against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, visitors can meet more than 55 vendors, sample dishes and ask questions about the food they make and sell. Elsewhere in the heart of Edinburgh's New Town, the Stockbridge Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 10am – 4pm and features an eclectic mix of vendors. You can fill up on fresh paella, take home some fresh hand-made marshmallows and stock up on cooking ingredients like curry paste and hand-pressed oils. Yum!

Edinburgh for adventurous eaters

Adventurous eaters of all ages have plenty to get their taste buds all fired up in Edinburgh. During the month of August, hundreds of pop-up food stands set up shop near popular Festival venues like George Square and the Pleasance, along with other well-known haunts like the Mound. You can taste everything from fresh crepes to a fiery Thai curry, and reasonable prices ensure you can get your fill for much less than at a traditional restaurant. A new event has also taken the city by storm for the month of August –Street Food Sundays on Castle Terrace. You can expect dozens of vendors selling freshly prepared, made-to-order produce from local Scottish suppliers and an exciting group of chefs serving up eclectic, fresh dishes, right on the spot.

Fun food for Children

Festival Square on Lothian Road is the place to be for hungry families. Boxsmall is a pop up picnic in the heart of the city, bringing together a collection of local vendors to sell their fares. Designed exclusively as a family market, Boxsmall brings together delicious food with fun events for children that everyone can enjoy. At the market you can also find the Airpuddle – this giant interactive pillow offers children the chance to jump on cloud 'pillows' with projected interactive art helping to set the scene. The fun event makes it easy to bounce, taste and enjoy a day out fit for the whole family.
