Winchester Christmas Market

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market

With a reputation as one of Europe’s best Christmas destinations, Winchester’s the place if you like a traditional Christmas market. And, 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market. The German-inspired event features more than 100 wooden chalets, adding a beautifully rustic warm glow to the historic Cathedral Close.

This magical scene centres on the city’s festive ice rink, with the cathedral’s huge Christmas tree reaching the top of its gothic roof.

Exhibitors have been handpicked for their unique and high quality gifts, many of which you can’t buy on the high street. There’s also a selection of aromatic stalls selling bratwursts, mince pies and mulled wine - everything you need to keep you going as you browse.

Winchester’s open air ice rink

Winchester’s outdoor ice rink glistens in the centre of the Christmas market, making it easy to break off for a whirl on the ice. This year, to help celebrate its 10th birthday, it’s been given a glamorous makeover and is now complete with a clear- span roof. Rain won’t stop your fun and you can look up to the starry night above you as you take to the ice.

While the setting is idyllic, with its medieval backdrop, the ice rink really comes into its own after twilight when the cathedral lights up and the market stalls glow.
