History

Established in a converted tennis court in 1734, the Theatre Royal has been transformed over the years. Inside its twelfth century building mingles with Georgian interiors, while outside the Victorian façade sits next to sixties’ concrete.

A major refurbishment in 2015 saw further changes making the theatre a destination for more than just catching a show. From The Railway Children and the York Mystery Plays to youth theatre groups and workshops, you’ll find plenty to see and do at this theatre.

Getting there

Sitting in the shadow of York Minster, York Theatre Royal is located in the heart of York. If you’re going to the theatre immediately after landing, you can get to the Theatre Royal from Leeds Bradford International Airport within 1 hour by car or 1 hour and 30 minutes by train.

Top tip

The Theatre Royal’s fantastic refurbishment means it’s a great place to hang out. Head downstairs to the café and enjoy the tranquil view through the gothic arches.
