School summer holidays will cost British families an extra £26 billion this year

With the school Summer holidays kicking off this weekend, the UK’s biggest hotel chain reveals that nationwide £26* billion will be spent by British families on keeping their children occupied.

Parents across the UK will need to tighten their belts over the coming weeks as Premier Inn predicts that on average each family will spend £1,515** over the six week break.

Typical costs for a family of 4 for the school Summer holiday will include:

• Average childcare costs per family - £984
• Lunch/ refreshments - £90
• Travel costs - £183.90
• ‘Extras’ (e.g. guide book/ souvenirs etc) - £40.50
• Average family day pass cost for popular attractions - £216

If parents want to take the kids away this Summer but don’t want to spend a fortune, Premier Inn currently has over 250,000 rooms available from just £29 this Summer*** in many of their 590 hotels located in both sunny seaside towns and city centres across the UK.

Premier Inn spokesperson, Steve Conway, said: ‘Parents are under increasing pressure to find cost-effective ways of entertaining their children throughout the Summer Holidays. Many families will choose to stay in the UK this Summer and by offering a quality, great value break, Premier Inn aims to help families feel refreshed and relieved of financial worry.’

Gemma Walker, mum of three from London says, ‘Summer Holidays are proving to be extremely costly for us this year and even the little extras that we buy to keep the kids happy are really adding up. In order to save some cash this year, we have decided to find new ways to holiday and keep the kids entertained.’
